FADS presents Dr Lesley Marx on Heritage Cinema.

Cynically dubbed “The Laura Ashley school of filmmaking” by British filmmaker Alan Parker, so-called “heritage cinema” has summoned both vitriol and admiration from critics and audiences. Films are often marked by their relationship to prestigious literary sources, exquisite mise-en-scène, dialogue-driven narrative and the presentation of the past as an opportunity for spectacle rather than analysis. While privileging upper class experience is a marker of these films, it is also true that the exploration of female desire is frequently given centre stage. This lecture, will focus on two Merchant-Ivory films, A Room With A View and Howard’s End and on two adaptations of James novels: Ian Softley’s of The Wings of the Dove and William Wyler’s version of Washington Square (renamed The Heiress).

The Barnard Gallery presents Barry Sullivan " Another Man's Vine"

‘Another Man’s Vine’ the show evokes a sense of appropriation. Through whimsical, symbolically rich imagery Sullivan evokes a world of contradiction and ambiguity. Depicted against large expanses of emptiness, his Lilliputian “characters” – be they bureaucrats or minstrels - play out mini-pageants in which they seem to be pitted against an their own puny existence. And despite the evident twinkle in Sullivan’s eye, a sense of tension, even menace seems to lurk below their delicately rendered surfaces.

2012 Colour can Heal Seminar, brought to you by FloorworX

Helle Wijk, RN/T, PhD, Seniour lecturer, Associate professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy at Göteborg University Institute of Health and Care Sciences, Sweden, will be our guest speaker at the "Colour can heal" seminar taking place between 19-21 June 2012 in Midrand, Durban and Cape Town.

Dr. Helle Wijk: "New design principles has been developed, aimed at promoting healing environments that can contribute to patients recovery and well-being, as well as helping staff to cope better with stress and increase relatives involvement in the caring process. There is a strong need to enable better architectural programming as well as design in different kinds of health-care building projects including assisted living services. In addition residential healthcare is a new research area within the field of evidence-based design, concerned with a situation where more of healthcare activities take place in private homes. This is an increasing tendency connected to the demographic development in many countries around the world.

Collaboration between architecture, medicine and caring could be expanded when planning for new institutions so as to promote a better understanding of the special needs of the patients."
